What information is needed for my Commercial Learner's Permit application?
You will need basic information including your social security card and current Pennsylvania driver's license. You will also decide what endorsements and class you desire.

What is a Hazardous Materials Endorsement?
Hazardous materials can only be transported by a specially licensed driver who has a hazardous materials (or HazMat) endorsement. Unlike the other endorsements, this endorsement requires you to be fingerprinted. The state of Pennsylvania will also complete a background check before you are cleared to receive your HazMat endorsement.

What is a Tank Endorsement?
In order to drive a tank truck in the state of Pennsylvania, you must have a tank endorsement. Tank trucks are used to transport gas and other liquids. If you are carrying hazardous liquid or gas, you will need both a tank endorsement and a hazardous materials endorsement.

What is a Doubles/Triples Endorsement?
If you want to pull more than one trailer, you will need a double/triples endorsement. You must learn where to put the lightest and heaviest trailers, how to hook up multiple trailers, and learn how to drive with multiple trailers.

Where do I apply for my Commercial Driver's License (CDL)?
You can apply for your commercial driver's license at most Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicle centers.  Contact your local DMV to find out specific information.

How much does it cost to apply for an endorsement?
The cost is $5 per endorsement.

What skills do you need to make a good living as a truck driver?
Of course, you must know how to safely drive and fully operate a commercial truck. You must also have good time management skills since you may at times be transporting "hot loads" which are loads that must arrive at a destination by a certain time, especially if they are refrigerated or perishable items.  You will want to plan your route before you set off to deliver whatever you are carrying. Be aware of road closures, one-way roads, tunnels, and overall road conditions. There will be some expenses that you may include in your budgeting, including toll roads, truck and trailer washes, and unloading fees.

Is a truck driver required to complete a lot of paperwork?
Paperwork is required of truck drivers. They are responsible for documenting delivery of each load, as well as the number of hours they work and drive in a day (which is kept in a driving log).

Does a truck driver work regular, 9 to 5 hours?
In most cases, no. Many businesses require that you make deliveries before they open for the day, which means a truck driver's day often begins early in the morning. Truck drivers often work for several days at a time, and then have several days off. There are regulations regarding how many hours a driver can work in a week.
